The first year was actually the hardest because as a father you don't--other than just the innate connection you have to your child you don't really have the same responsibility, clearly, as the mother. There's that chemical connection, there's feeding, you know, nursing,. I think the first year for me was one of the hardest of my life because I was trying to, again, figure out how to be a fantastic dad and just not having any concept of how that happens. And I think the hardest part for the husband is that they feel in some ways like they disappear, and they don't know how to get through this. They don't know what their role is. The mother has so many clear, distinct responsibilities, and it took my wife finally asking me what was going on--I was trying to put up a good front that everything was okay for her. But what was the real breakthrough for us was that I realized that I needed some time, just any time within that first year, during the week to collect my thoughts, to be apart from my family so I could appreciate, recharge, and come back to my wife. And the same, because I had that opportunity she also had the same feeling that she could be away and was so excited by the time she returned, and I think we put a lot of responsibility on ourselves to try and be there, like that was how you proved you were a great parent, by being there. And I think it's so much healthier to take some time to separate and really get some perspective on what a bizarre and wonderful first year that is.
