Getting your baby to sleep involves parents understanding a few key aspects about sleep. First, sleep is a learned skill and process that parents need to help their babies acquire. The process often gets interrupted by development and, therefore, often has to be revisited. Also, it's important for parents to get the sleep tenant; sleep begets sleep. The better they sleep in the day, the better they sleep at night, and this carries on over and over. When the body gets overtired, it releases a hormone called cortisol that fights fatigue and makes it more difficult for babies to access their self-soothing skills. When parents respect this fact and put their baby down frequently, keep their periods of wakefulness short, and putting their baby down early in the evening; as well as, implement a consistent, soothing routine of a few loving actions that they do every sleep period. It lets them know that sleep is coming, and ultimately, put their baby down awake; they will give the child the gift of learning to go to sleep on their own, and self-soothing.
