What manners do you focus on with your kids?

Posted September 23, 2015 - 6:47pm

Are manners a big deal to you? If so, which ones do you focus on? I feel like I'm constantly nagging my kids, but not sure if it is really sinking it.

Saying please and thank you, always thanking the parents when they are leaving a birthday party for a classmate. Covering sneezes and coughs, saying excuse me if they burp. Not grabbing things, try not to interrupt people those are some of the main ones I care about.

I agree!  Those are my main ones too. Also, "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all"

Your Kid's Table

Those are all on my list. Kids grabbing things is definitely my pet peeve!

Yes! Manners are a big deal in this house. Partially because my husband's family were uber polite, so sometime I do have to calm him down a bit. Please and thank you and excuse me for sure. I include interruptions with manners as well -- learning how to wait or when it's necessary to interrupt or the right way to do it.

Your Kid's Table

Good point, but it is nice to hear so many people find it important. I feel like many parents allow these things to slide.

My kids have to make eye contact and say thank you. They also have to eat properly, no cell phones at the table or playing around.

Your Kid's Table

Yes eye contact! My kids are little so this can be hard, but I always try to reinforce.

We cover Please, thank you, excuse me, may I interupt? As well as boys hold doors open for girls...children run ahead and catch the door for the elderly....and thank you notes.

Your Kid's Table

Door holding, I haven't done that yet! Will start working on this one:)

Yes, I forgot thank you notes. When they were little I took a photo of them with the gift and had them sign a card. Now that they are older they hand write notes and say what they used a gift card for or just a simple thank you to them.

Your Kid's Table

I always want to do the picture and thank you card thing, but can never get that organized. It is the nicest gesture though, and I have been on the receiving end before. It is really nice.

Southern roots here. We always teach manners with everything. People compliment me on how well I raised them. :)

Frugal Minded M...

I would definitely say table manners and to be polite and respectful.

Your Kid's Table

My kids are little, but we have been talking a lot about respect. It can be a difficult concept.
