It's really interesting to me that so many mothers today still think that they don't make enough milk for their babies, when, in fact we have the evidence to support the idea that very few of us cannot make enough milk for our babies, probably only 5%. So why do mothers feel this way? What evidence shows, is that the leading cause of breastfeeding failure, is the belief that we don't have enough milk, and that's contributed to by not having the education that tells us, not only how milk is made, but how to get milk started, and how to maintain a good supply.

Breastfeeding Information

Babies have tiny stomachs. Their newborn stomach is about the size of this marble, which holds about a teaspoon of milk. By day five, their stomach can expand to hold up to an ounce. And by two weeks, it can expand to hold up to two ounces. Because their stomachs are so tiny, they fill and empty quickly. So moms need to feed their babies often. The motor that really drives milk supply, is the removal of milk. So, if you're not nursing enough, if you're supplementing, and not taking milk out of your breasts, you're not gonna have a great milk supply. So mothers kind of miss that piece. Breastfeeding is a learned skill. So we'd like to share with you a few tips that would get you off to a good start, and help set you on the path to successful breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Tips and Tricks

Learn your stuff. We can't emphasize enough how important it is to talk to breastfeeding moms, read books, and go to a breastfeeding class with your partner. It's so valuable to have a supportive other in the house, who understands how breastfeeding works. And then learn, what we would call, the five golden rules to getting off to a good start. First off, get your baby to breast within the first hour or two after birth. Second of all, moms and babies need to stay together, particularly at night, 'cause that's when newborns eat the most. Thirdly, get a great latch. It's so helpful for you, and for your baby. Mom's nipples won't get as sore, and babies get more milk. Fourth, babies need to be fed often. They should go to breast at least eight to 12 times, even on the first day. And last, if possible, avoid artificial nipples, such as bottles and pacifiers. Try not to supplement your newborn baby. Healthy, full-term babies usually don't need it.

Breastfeeding Positioning

-This is what is known as a Side Lie Position, and this is excellent for moms who would like to get a nap, and rest with their baby. It's also great for new moms who have just delivered, and they have a really sore behind from stitches, and/or hemorrhoids, 'cause it keeps the pressure off your back. To do the Side Lie, you-- the mom simply lies on her side, as you can see this mom is doing, put a pillow or two underneath your head and shoulders, whatever's comfortable for you. Your bottom arm is kind of pulled up out of the way. You can tuck a pillow behind your back, if that helps you to be more comfortable. And you might want a pillow between your knees. Your baby is placed on their side on the mattress, and you might want to start him with just a little bit lower than your nipple so that they can lift up to latch on. The mom uses the arm opposite the breast to bring her nipple up into the baby's mouth to help them latch, supporting the baby with her other arm. And this little baby's pretty sleepy, but we'll see if we can get him to come on. There you go buddy, there it is. There you go. There you go, perfect. And he's on. And many moms just fall asleep and get a really nice nap, which is perfect, 'cause new moms are always lookin' for a little opportunity to do that.

Breastfeeding Tips for New Mothers

A lot of people are confused about how long to breastfeed a toddler, and if it really makes any difference at all. I find it really interesting that even some doctors will tell moms, after six months, that the breastfeeding is really for the mother, and it does very little for the infant, when in fact, there are volumes of research to support that breastfeeding continues to be beneficial for the child, regardless of their age. One last thing to set you on the right path, get help. All over this country, there are lactation consultants, ready and waiting to help you. Don't wait. And, in fact, find out where those helpers might be before you even have your baby.

When a women gives birth to a baby for the first time, it’s difficult for her to take care of the first 72 hours newborn, so she must be guided properly by the healthcare professionals, and let her know the right way of breastfeeding and take care of herself as well.
