Many people feel that handwriting may not be that important anymore. However, what we forget is that the skills the child needs in order to write is coordination in their small motor systems, to hold a pencil and to control the pencil which are the same skills that the child is using to learn to type. If they are struggling with coordinating the pencil and with writing, there is a chance that they will also struggle with the process of learning to type. Handwriting also requires the visual system, the visual memory system, perceptual systems, and the fine motor systems to work together. Those systems are used every day in throwing a ball, catching a ball, in coloring, in cutting, in typing, and all types of activities, and using a knife and fork. Handwriting, in itself, is an important skill in their visual motor systems, which are used in multiple other activities in life.
