How do we address our son's association with friends that has led him to bullying and trouble at school?

Posted November 18, 2013 - 6:49am
So our son and some "friends" were horseplaying with a boy at school and now are suspended for 3 days because one of the other boys touched the victim In an inappropriate place of his backside. Since my son was the one who initiated the whole thing by holding the boy and encouraging the others to "pants him", in other words pull down his pants- thankfully not underpants, we are very concerned about bullying. He know that the act escalated and sees now that it was wrong. These boys have all grown up in the same area and schools for years now and don't seem to realize that despite what we keep telling them.....school is for school. We are at a loss of how to even feel about all of this. I know it is all in Gods hands, but am terribly fearful for my son's future. This is not his true character and I hate that he is now labeled as a bully in today's society. Please help with your prayers and any encouraging words.

There are tons of amazing bullying experts on this site. I highly suggest watching their videos to get a sense of the whole picture. There are also lots of great expert videos about building character, morals and ethics; I highly suggest those as well. There are things you can do to build empathy and sensitivity in your son. You are right to be concerned and in addition to God's Grace, your purposeful parenting can make a difference!! Don't let it go because there are lots more innocent people he could hurt ahead of him.

Oh gosh, Peal... I'm so sorry you're going through this. I don't have any advice, but just wanted to lend my support and remind you that you are not to blame. I also think people are quick to label in today's society, and some of what you describe is typical boy behavior. But it's definitely better to nip it in the bud.
