My little guy is nervous about starting...

Posted September 7, 2015 - 6:53pm

My newly turned 4 year old is nervous about starting preschool tomorrow. He is my second child and I never dealt with this with my oldest. I don't want to just stick my head in the sand and hope that he doesn't cry when it is time to drop off (although I really hope that is the case). I know the teachers can handle it, but I want to do everything I can to help him feel secure. Looking for an advice you all have.

My youngest will be starting on Thursday and I am a bit nervous too about how shell behave although she knows the teacher and is very comfortable with the location.  I just keep telling her all the neat things she is going to get to do there and how fun it will be and that mom will be back to pick her up before she knows it.

awww, I am sure he will be fine once he gets acclimated to the routine, kids and schedule. Some kids have a harder time than others. I only had one out of five like that. The others were so ready and wanted to go they were chomping at the bit.  Good luck, let us know how it goes.

In my son's case, he had behavioral problems so I stuck around off to the side a couple times to make sure everything went ok. I really had a lot of fun watching everybody play together. You might want to consider sticking around if possible the first day until your child feels safe.

That's really nice the school let you do that. I know my school wouldn't have allowed that. Thankfully I didn't need it!

Well, he did great today! He told me on the way to school, "Don't leave there," which wasn't very reassuring. We talked about his exciting snack (cookies the school provides) and the fun toys. When it was time to go in, he walked right in and didn't look back. I cried tears of happiness and sadness for letting go a little of my baby!

So glad it went well for you yesterday. My 3 year old starts tomorrow, but they start off slow with only 1 hour.  The parents leave the kids in the room and the school director talks to us downstairs.  Most of the time I'll be in another part of the building since the school is at our church where I am treasurer.  So I'll do my work while she's in school.

Oh that is really nice! She will probably love knowing that you aren't too far away.

My daughter went for the first time the other day and had no seperation issues.  In fact when I picked her up, I asked her if she had fun.  She said yes and thank you mommy for taking me.  Then the next day she cried because it wasn't a school day.

Just wanted to update this post. My little guy that was nervous is doing so awesome. He is so excited to go and us disappointed that he can't go everyday.

Aw! That's so great to hear! It's so bitter sweet. You want them to enjoy it, but you miss and worry about them. So glad he is doing well!
