Private School versus Public School

Posted August 23, 2015 - 10:59pm

My daughter is in a wonderful private school which I enrolled her in because of their terrific dyslexia program. My son would also like to attend the school even though he doesn't "need" it. It would be a substantial financial struggle but I want to support his academic career. Any suggestions?

Perhaps your son who "doesn't need it" only knows this venue as school--and is eager to go to school? My children have always gone to public school. We've had some years of disaster and some years amazing opportunities! My sister has taught in public and private schools and the same can be said. I think it depends on the child, their needs and what works best for the family.

I agree that it depends on the child and what works best for the family. Here in the Houston area there is such a wide range of quality in public and private schools that it really depends on where you live. We lucked out and have a great public school here. There's a lot of moving parts to that decision.

Thanks for your input. I have a great support system of other moms from the school that help with rides and know and love my son. As a single mom that is invaluable and he does love going to school, so can't complain there. The financial struggle is one I have to weigh heavily. We could be able to do so much more as a family without a tuition payment, but it is only for 3 more years so I feel that his academics are more important that family trips and such. no easy answers!

No easy answers for sure! But I think you have the right perspective on the situation.
