The phenomenon of vanishing twin syndrome is diagnosed during the first trimester, through ultrasound, identifying two gestational sacks. What ultimately happens is that one sack can be lost, absorbed, or vanishes by the second trimester. Therefore, only one sack continues. This is seen in about 20-60 percent in spontaneous twin pregnancies.
