The Pregnancy Discrimination Act is actually a very recent Federal legislation. It was enacted to fellow loop-hole created by the Supreme Court when it ruled that Title 7 protections said that pregnancy discrimination is different than sex discrimination and it's not protected. They enacted this legislation which extends protections to pregnant women as well. So where it was not, it is now illegal to discriminate against pregnant women or women who seek to become pregnant. Like Title 7, however, there are limitations to who is protected by this legislature. It only applies to private employers with 15 or more employees or public employers.
