Backtalk, sas mouth, being fresh, don´t you just hate it? Every parent hates it. Nobody wants to raise a child who sassy or disrespectful. Children are going to be disrespectful and talk back and use sas mouth at different stages of their lives for different reasons. Part of what they are doing is figuring out what works and what does not work. But they need to do it in order to learn that it won´t work. The cure for backtalk is actually pretty simple. It is: Your child talks back to you. Don´t acknowledge. Don´t receive. Don´t respond. Give your child what I call the stink eye. Pause and walk away. Now, you think I am going to say I am not going to talk to them about it. Of course, you are going to talk to them about it because you are going to come back 20 minutes later, a half, that night at tuck time. Hey buddy, what was going on with that? You spoke to me like I was dirt. That is not an okay way to talk to me. I do not talk to you that way. But the reality is backtalk sometimes happens because something else is going on and it´s your job as a parent to figure out what is really happening here. Is this typical, developmental talking back, figuring out the rules of the road or is something going on that needs to be explored? And it is your job as a parent to keep your eyes open, dig a little and see if there is something else going on. Finally, if you do not treat your child with respect, your child is not going to treat you with respect.
