Benefits of having an au pair

What is an au pair and how was our experience? Well, an au pair is a guy or girl, usually that comes from a country outside the U.S. here, who wants to do a couple things; they want to live in America for up to two years and they are interested in child care, usually goes through an agency, some type of au pair agency that sets it up. And what you do is, these young guys and girls usually between the ages of 20 and 27, I think, they're online and there's lots of profiles about them and videos about their likes and dislikes, their education and all the things that they want. You go online and you look at all that information. If you find somebody that you feel is compatible with your family, you can contact them, and you start a dialogue. If you guys agree that you both want to be together, then that au pair comes, signs a contract to come and work with your family. They go to, in my experience, they've gone to New York for I think, I believe it's a week worth of training. They are CPR certified, their backgrounds are checked out by the FBI, and they get a J-1 visa, which is super important because that means that they get to go on the books, and they get covered by your insurance. They get a driver's license and then they go on your car insurance, your home insurance, your family's insurance. It's a pretty good thing. And they work about 45 hours a week. I don't think they can work with kids that are under three months old, and I don't believe that you can leave overnight and leave just an au pair to watch your children. That's a big difference between a nanny and an au pair. The other thing is is that they're there to learn about not only childcare but about U.S. culture, and part of that is that they go to school. My experience is that they have to take a class a week, so they usually go to some local junior college or some class that they're interested in, it could be anything. And I think that's super important as well, that you understand that not only are they there to help you with your family and their childcare and their responsibilities really are focused on the child, but they're also there to experience life in the states. And I think it's important that you, as a family, expose them to as much of that as you can.
