Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease or Coxsackie virus is one of the more common childhood illnesses that exist today. It has replaced chicken pox and measles and mumps as one of those rights of passages that most children go through usually under five years of age. The parent usually comes to our office with a complaint of illness. They may have some red sores on their toes or their hands. And in certain cases, there will be sores in the mouth and around the buttocks or around the rectum. That is how it got its name hand, foot and mouth disease. It is a benign illness. In other words, it does not usually lead to any serious complications and while the parent may have a very irritable infant on their hands for a week and with or without fever, there usually is not specific intervention since it is a virual illness.
