Most importantly, there's been an increase in ADD and ADHD diagnoses because of public awareness. Many more parents today as opposed to 30 years ago when I began in this field, are aware when their child is struggling in school that there actually exists such a condition as ADD or ADHD. Second issue that comes up and I think has a telling effect on why we see more of these diagnoses today is the tremendous change in education itself over the last three decades. Children today are being placed under increased academic stress earlier and earlier in their educational careers. And for some children who may have been able to skirt by, who had some attentional and focus issues in the past, they're no longer able to do so because of the increased demands.
