Allergies and chemical sensitivity and autism is a huge topic. These children are hypersensitive to certain things in their environment. And it could be foods, it could be house dust mite, it could be mold, it could be pollens and grasses, it could be carpet, it could be off-gassing from the new car that the parents bought, or the new couch that the parents bought. And you'll see dark circles under their eyes and the parents will think commonly that they're not sleeping well. They'll have irregular responses to sounds and other stimuli. I had one child who was in my office and he was doing very, very well and mom gave him a snack of some chips, and within 15 minutes of eating those chips he was just a monster. He was climbing, jumping, screaming, spitting, biting himself. If we can figure out the underlying allergies and sensitivities and remove them from that child's environment, they do so much better. The tantrums go from three a day to three a week, and their eyes and their health just look a whole lot better, they're more present and more clear. It's very important to address allergies and chemical sensitivities in children with autism.
