I am often asked if there are different types of autism and the answer is yes because autism is a final common pathway. It shows up to us as a child who is totally dysfunctional in their environment. They are having problem with communicating. They are having problems with sensory issues, sight, sounds or smells or just not able to process the stimuli in a normal fashion. So I often use the word picture to help describe this to my parents as a child with a cough. In a pediatric office, there could be four children coughing and they are totally unrelated. The final common pathway is cough but one child is coughing because they have asthma and one child is coughing because they have a sinus infection. One child is coughing because they have allergies. It´s the fall season. And how you treat each one of those coughs is totally different. The same thing with autism. We can see these children have autistic issues but the underlying mechanism might be totally different from one child who might greatly benefit say from B12 shots and another child who might greatly benefit from kelation, the removal of heavy metals and on it goes. If we can find the underlying cause of the autism, we can make the children a lot better able to assimilate data in a more normal fashion and respond more typically.
