Definition of autism

Often I'm asked what my definition of autism is and, of course, there is the standard definition: children who have problems with communicating, repetitive motion, abnormal toy play, social skills, are delayed. But really what I look at in a child is how many responses to stimuli the child responds to abnormally. So the more abnormal response to stimuli, the worse that child is. For example, a child who doesn't understand mom saying, "I love you," or dad saying, "Go get your shoes," or doesn't understand the internal cues like, "I'm hungry," "I'm thirsty," "I have to use the bathroom." Things don't make sense to the child. With my son, he could walk on hot gravel in bare feet in the middle of summertime. Well, he wasn't responding to the hot gravel – the stimuli – in a normal way, he was just walking on it. Some kids would just put their hands on the stove and burn themselves and then they'll do it again. So the more abnormal responses to everyday stimuli, the more challenged we are to help that child to see and perceive our world in a normal way.
