Initially, it's utter shock. They are the feeling that, unfortunately, you have to go through. You immediately ask, "Why me?" And then perhaps the answer to that question is actually in the question itself. "Why not me?" Why should it happen to another family and not you yourself? It's the luck of the draw effectively. You need to go through a period of grief, and I think that's really cathartic in itself. For me, I started blogging crazily and photographing crazily every single moment of his life. That really helped me through, especially reaching out to other parents. There's an immense community out there of families just wanting to help. So my feelings now going from grief, which is really something you do need to go through, to an acceptance and an enjoyment of his differences.

British born and living in Los Angeles, Catherine Lacey Dodd is the mother to Reuben Jack, age five, and Callum Andreas, age four. She’s a work at home mama, owner/photographer at Catherine Lacey Photography and creative writer. Reuben, whose name means, "behold a beloved son", has CHARGE syndrome. He has undergone 18 surgeries including two open heart and countless hospitalizations. Callum is his much longed for brother and his best friend.
