Students ask me, “Can I exaggerate a little, or can I make up an activity that I really didn’t do?” No. I would advise not. Again, the application is really about authenticity. I can look at an application, and I can tell whether a student’s made stuff up, typically. I can tell whether a parent has written an essay, because I know so much about you from your recommendations and your grades, that it’s going to stand out. Now, do colleges verify every single piece of information? Honestly, they can’t. What they often do, though, is they randomly validate. So, they will pick, randomly, certain applications, and they will go through and they will evaluate every single thing. You don’t want to be the one caught by making up a little white lie, because you will get rejected. In fact, this has happened to students that I know, and school administrators, who have made up stuff on behalf of their students, and gotten caught. So, play it safe. If you want to choose between 3 hours and 4 hours, you can pick the 4 hours. But don’t make up stuff. Be authentic.
