There are typically 2 early admissions programs: early action and early decision. Early action is where a student applies, typically November 1st, November 15th. Those are the two deadlines. So a student will apply, hear back typically in December. But if that student gets into a school is not required to go there. Then there's early decision. Same time frame. Apply either usually by November 1st or the 15th. Hear back before the New Year. But if you do get in in early decision, you have to go that school with one exception. If you do not get enough financial aid for early decision, they will let you out of the commitment. So that's the one way that you can get out of an early decision commitment. The other - there's a third type. Single choice, early action. So that is, you're applying and you're not committed, but you can only apply to that one school early action. You can't apply anywhere else early. It's confusing, and very few schools have that restriction. But you're going to want to know before you check any box what the policies are of that school.
