Picking a child therapist

There are a few important things when picking a child therapist. First, find out what their system of work is. If you find a child therapist who is all about harsh values, teaching didactism, that's probably not the right person. Remember that, since your kid was about one year old, their entire experience of the world has been people telling them what to do; parents, teachers, other kids, every authority figure telling them what to do. They don't need another dictating authority figure. Number two, find someone that you like, you get along with, and you respect. If you have the best therapist since Mary Poppins working with your kid, but you don't think much of them; the kid is going to pick up on that and it won't work. Number three, let your kid choose. Take them to see that therapist and say, "Do you like this person? Do you want to come back here?" Number one, that's going to make your kid feel really good because they get to be in charge, but secondly, kids are smart. Kids are really smart, and they will pick up on the person that will help them the most.
