The average child should get their initial skin cancer screening around age 10 to 12. 90% of pediatric melanomas are curtain children from age 10 to 19 and melanoma is the 2nd most common cancer in children from age 15 to 29 so you do definitely want to get your child screened. Children that may need earlier screening include children who have lots of moles already, children who have had large mole since birth or children that have significant family history of skin cancer. During that initial screening the dermatologist will be able to determine frequency at which your child need to be followed and will also give you and your child information and education in how to detect cancer in early stage and how to prevent skin cancer from developing.
