Parents should start talking to kids about career and college exploration really early. One of the things that kids are not really fully able to do as children and even as adolescents, it to look ahead and to see the consequence of their actions. So what we don’t want as parents is for kids to close doors for themselves in terms of career and college. So we want to help kids look at the target of where they want to go and then develop a plan beyond the four-year plan, just the high school plan. But what does it take before high school? Map out that plan and say, “This is where you want to get. What’s it going to take to get there? What’s it going to take in terms of test scores, course selection, your grades in that course?” Because college entrance is pretty competitive nowadays and it’s really important that kids have all those things lined up. They’re not necessarily thinking of those things at 12 and 13 years old, so that’s how parents can really help. And helping kids tie into where they want to go, where their interests are for career and college majors and that sort of thing can also help kids see relevancy in what they’re learning right now for the future.
