Stephen Wallace: Jobs for teens are actually a double-edged sword. They’re good because they inspire self-direction and motivation and confidence and responsibility. And of course they come with spending money that we as parents don’t have to provide. So these are all good things. On the other hand, there’s been some research that shows that young people with jobs are more likely to engage in other adult-like behaviors such as underage drinking and drug use that maybe a result of the stress of the job or simply because they’re hanging out with co-workers who are adults and are engaging in those activities. Also jobs can distract young people from more important activities like school work, the arts, extra-curricular activities or athletics. So we need to be careful to make sure that there’s balance in their life if they are going to hold a job. And the last but not the least, we want to make sure that they get enough sleep. If they’re going to school all day and then coming home and working a night job, getting home late, not getting enough rest, that can detract from their schoolwork and their social activities.
