People can go from use to abuse without realizing it. They, suddenly one day rolls into the next and they realize when they look back on it, "You know, I've had a drink every night this week, every night this month." Vacation, relaxation, and celebration rolls into what happens on a day in day out basis. And for a vast majority of people, they can look at it and say, "Wait a minute, what am I doing? Why am I buying another bottle of wine tonight at the store? Why am I buying another bottle of vodka this week at the store?" Or whatever that may be. And so, they are able to self-check. There are some people tha aren't. It rolls from one day to the next and each time they hit a hard space in life, whether that's frustration, stress, angst, too much traffic, too busy, unhappy, in a bad relationship, they can find any excuse, they can pull anything out of the day in our complex lives, to have a reason to use. That's when you've crossed over into abuse.
