Parents, you have this very competent, risk-taking and a little bit on the edge kid, what are you going to do when they have technology available to them? First of all, you need to make sure that your expectations are on the table. The parent and the child need to talk. They need to have this two-way communication about what things are acceptable and what things are not acceptable. You need to set parameters. You need to make sure that if they go outside those parameters, you start bringing things in and making them a little bit more difficult for your child to have access to certain things. For example, your son likes to play video games. Great. Gets online and plays video games. Do you want them playing video games 24 hours a day? Absolutely not. So you need to set some parameters; how much time that they can play. Let's say your daughter likes to get on Facebook and spends lots of time on Facebook. She starts doing things that start to push the boundaries about what is acceptable in your family. You may have to say, time out for this Facebook. You may have to say, "I'm not going to let you have Facebook except when I log you in." But you have to keep in mind, Facebook is not the only social media out there. If you put all these parameters in, they still may go outside those parameters. You need to pay attention to what your child is doing when they are not home. How much time they are spending away from home. Things like that. Pay attention to your child's environment, the accesses that they have with technology.
