We're often asked about to evaluate a child with what's called toddler's diarrhea. The diarrhea seems to happen for no good reason, the parents at wits end because they try to modify the diet and change things, and to add things, take things away and it hasn't seemed to make a difference. What's frustrating is the child seems to be healthy in every other way. Their thriving, active, playful, they're not vomiting. They don't have other medical problems and this is not a problem to be concerned or worried about other than trying to ask the question why. It usually occurs in a child taking excessive sweets or sweetened beverages. A lot of excessive juices, especially from a bottle and toddlers really shouldn't really be drinking from a bottle they should be drinking from a cup and not be allowed to walk around with a bottle drinking fruit juice all day. Once the child is potty trained, this problem usually goes away. And one of the remedies that parents or the physician can consider is to add a fiber product to the child's regiment and this will firm up and give better structure and form to the stool and it makes a nice cosmetic effect. It really doesn't change anything, but it alleviates the problem until the child is potty trained. So this is called toddler's diarrhea and it's usually due to excessive fruit juice or juice intake.
