If your one and a half year old is not using between 5 and 20 words, that may be a time to consult your pediatrician and, also, a speech and language pathologist, to find out where their communication skills are. Part of that process is looking at non-verbal communication, which is how your child uses emotional expressions and gesturing, following directions. Their social relatedness to the world, as well as, verbal communication. Both pieces are important in communication.
