Motivation is a funny thing for all of us. We are all motivated by something. When a young athlete or young person is talented at something, they are interested early on in the social aspects. They are looking to explore the social engagement, the fun, and the comradery of people who have similar interests. At some point, it begins to change. In their teens, they want to get better. They want skill. They want proficiency. They are looking to advance in their talent. As a parent, it's important for us to understand which primary motivation they are interested in. If they are interested in social engagement, keep supporting that. Eventually, they will move into the category of wanting to be proficient in what they do. Understanding the child and then supporting their primary interests, is the best way to support young, talented children.
