I have a very low tolerance for people who are hyper-critical. Coaching is different. When there is proper instruction and there is coaching involved, and development in the child's best interests are involved; that's a whole other ballgame. When stage moms or stage dads or coaches are hyper-critical, for me that is not the right environment for learning; even if the coach is well-respected or the parent is well-respected in their craft. Everyone has their individual preference, but for me, it just doesn't work. Having this opportunity to learn and grow is stifled by hyper-criticalness, by the berating in a negative direction. There is a balance between what coaches do to help people get better, and what coaches can say that damage a person's self-value over a lifetime. This is a very important aspect when we involve our young children in skill development.
