It's important for girls who cut be working with a mental health professional. What of the things you want to screen in a mental health professional is to find out what their experience is in young women who do cut. You may also want to ask them about their approach. There are some wonderful approaches that are being developed and research to help girls who self-injure. One of those, is dialectical behavior therapy, and there are others. Be curious about the approach that therapist will be taking. You may also want to ask about your involvement in the therapy and how the therapist plans to include you, or not include you in the work that he or she is doing with your daughter. Finally, you want to include your daughter in the process as much as possible. Some teenagers like to select their therapist from the two therapists that you have already pre-screened. This gives them the sense of choice and empowerment and gives them an opportunity to think about who they would feel the most safe with. Who will they be able to trust, over time, so that they can begin to heal?
