It’s very common for children and teens to have what I call anticipatory anxiety. Anxiety that is anticipating a test, or other performance that may be coming up for them. The first thing I like to do is find out more about what they’re afraid of. Maybe they’re worried about not being able to remember some key aspect of information. Maybe they’re worried about how they’re going to get teased on the playground, if they don’t do well on the test. So finding out what the specific fear is about is a really great place to start. And then after that you can really help your child to think of some solutions that they can use to help calm themselves and some strategies so that they can handle their specific fear.
