We help our children heal from the trauma that is a lot of stress by helping them to feel safer, to feel more comfortable. And the way we do that, is to pay attention to their nonverbal cues, to really watch these children from a position, from eyeballs that are emphatic. When we look at our children and try to understand the world from their point of view, we begin to make the world safer. When they see that we are interested in not only what they're doing but how they feel about what they're doing, and how they feel about life, and how they feel about this side and the other, and that we are not judging them but we just really want to understand. That goes a long way to give, to help the child feel safe, feel known, feel understood, and feel accepted. These are the things that bring nervous system back into balance because a balanced nervous system feels safe, feels just right. And we're helping a child to get back to that "just right" feeling, is what we're doing by paying attention to them in this way.
