A few years ago when my family and I moved from Turkey back to the United States, we felt like we were driving a slow car in the fast lane, and we could not keep up, because we became accustomed to living in a relationship-based culture, and we were thrust into a productivity-obsessed culture. And what we've found is that we can live slower, but it takes a lot of swimming upstream. Choosing to be okay with being different, and having to think through our daily, everyday choices, because we learned that those really do add up to a completely different family culture, and choices, and values. So, we broke down things like work, entertainment, food, education, and travel, and thought through all the little things that we do in those areas of life, and we explored how we could slow those down here in America. So, my book "Notes From a Blue Bike", explores our experience of returning to the US and asking ourselves whether we can live slowly here the way we did in Turkey. The thing is you can live slower in a fast-paced world, but it takes a lot of effort. It takes a lot of swimming upstream, and it requires passion and commitment from the entire family to do it.
