When I first had my kids, just to get some adult interaction, I would take them out together and you cannot believe the amount of attention twin babies will get.
Everybody wants to talk to you and touch you and touch them, ask stupid questions -- nice questions, but it can be really, really overwhelming. I would do it sometimes because I needed the interaction, but sometimes I just wanted to get my shopping done. It was very frustrating.
I usually recommend to people that they have a plan when they go out. Either go out with one baby, when possible or have a plan about what you are going to say when people ask, "Are the identical?" even when you so obviously have a boy and a girl or want to touch them and feel them. I will usually say, "Yes, they are twins." "No, they are not identical. Please don't touch them." I would make up something like they just got over being sick or something, because I just didn't like all of the excess attention.
