I think the biggest challenge our family has had to face with a child with multiple food allergies is the idea of exclusion; so exclusion at parties, play dates, being in the classroom and participating in activities, the exclusion of we have to choose to not let her do some things because we don't feel like it's safe, and that's not fair to her. So it's the idea of that as her mom, I need to educate other people about what it means to live with food allergies and how to keep her safe, and that hopefully people can understand what we do on a day-to-day basis to keep her safe. So if she's asked to go on a play date, please invite us. But I'm going to talk to you about what it's like to have food allergies and what it means to keep her safe. Please invite us to birthday parties, but at the same time I'm going to nag you a little bit about what's being offered at your party so that if, by chance, you're going to serve peanuts as a party favor or just as a treat, then I might not go because it's going to be dangerous for her.
