Overcoming challenges in parenting

I often hear from parents how intimidating it can be to hear all this advice and to think, "How can I possibly do it? How can I possibly get it right? How can I possibly be a good parent and not go to bed every night thinking about all the mistakes I made during the day?" And, what I do for myself, and what I really want other parents to do is to let it be okay to let go of perfection, and to know that over time, your child is going to learn these things from you. Parenting is a subtle molding over time. It's not a to-do list, it's not getting it right or being perfect, and as my son has grown up, what I've discovered is that what he needs from me is belief in him as he's acquiring all these skills and all these ways of being in the world. He needs me to know or to show him that I know that he knows these things now and that I need to let go and let him grow and let him become his own person. So, parenting is hard, and we need to be very kind to ourselves and know that a lot of these parenting ideas are like high mountain peaks that we'll never quite get all the way to; it's a journey and it's a practice, and it’s all about our intention and our lovingness toward our children.

Julie Wright, MFT is a marriage and family therapist with an extensive background in infant mental health and early childhood development.  She trained at Cedars Sinai Early Childhood Center and co-developed a program for parents and babies from 0-3 at LA Child Guidance Clinic. Julie specializes in mindful parenting, sleep issues and attachment theory.  She also works in private practice with infants, children, parents and adults.  Julie lives in Los Angeles with her son and often visits family on the east coast.
