Tips for managing parental stress

It's really important for kid's happiness, that their parents manage their stress in some way. One thing I recommend parents do, in order to get better at managing stress, is to pay attention to their daily routines and habits and notice if you have a routine that is not working for you. If, every single day, you are stressed out and yelling, you notice your younger child is crying. I began to notice this when my child went off to school. I would notice that every single day at 7:57, I was screaming at them. The stress level was high. That's what I mean. The pain point in your routine, where every single day, we are feeling negative emotions. What we need to do is re-engineer those pain points that we feel positive emotions in a routine kind of way. The first thing to do is pay attention to your routines, where they are working and where they are not. I also want parents to pay attention to the times are going really well. So scheduled bliss. I feel really great at bedtime with my kids, that works really well for us. I get to talk about good things that happened during the day. I really love that. To make sure that is baked in to your every day routine, is really important to your feeling happier, overall.

A sociologist and happiness expert at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, Christine Carter, PhD is the author of Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents. Carter has been a keynote speaker at hundreds of events and professional groups. In 2010, she received an award from the Council on Contemporary Families for her outstanding science-based reporting on family issues. In 2011 she won Red Tricycle’s award for the “Most Awesome Parent Education,” and so far in 2012 she has been nominated for a Bammy Award and for an award from the American Sociological Association for public sociology.
