If one looks at what helps people to be more resilient, what helps our children to develop resilience. In every study that was done, you ask resilient people what has been most helpful to you, they talk about at least one person, one adult who really believed in them and stood by them and offered them unconditional love. It is hard really to start to just like yourself if you do not have people who love you. But the people who show you that love know that there are certain things that they can do. They accept you. They help you to correct mistakes without being judgmental or accusatory. They find what your strenghts are, and they really build upon your strengths. There is this general person that this person is behind me. Once you start feeling that love, it is amazing to me how you are willing to take risks. How when adversity occurs you start to feel, "You know what there are people to help me. I can overcome this adversity," What really comes from that is a much more hopeful optimistic attitude. It is very difficult to think about without thinking that there is several people who have been there for you and very supportive of you.
