Pain medication are plentiful in the delivery room and your nurses and doctor may offer them to you regularly. They're not mandatory, you don't have to take them. The pro's of taking them can be that it will provide pain relief obviously. But also it may make a more pleasant environment for everyone else involve. If you are having a lot of discomfort, those around you that can't take the pain on, will feel better if you are relived because then you can get some relief for your partner and others involved. Con's might be, if you get pain medicines at the end and I am not saying epidural, but pain medicines the IV. Sometimes it can affect the baby in the short term. So if you get pain medicine and delivery shortly thereafter, the baby may be a little sleepy. But that ware's of, we don't give medications and high enough dosage to cause any permanent defects to the baby.
