Open sperm donation is, basically, someone who has agreed to having the child in which he donated the sperm for, reach out to him when he is 18. The pros and cons -- I chose an open donor because I feel like my child is going to have so many questions, and a story in which he is going to have to tell and be proud of. I didn't want to not give him the opportunity to be able to, not only contact, but find out a little bit more about his dad, his donor. For me, that is part of the pros, is being able to give your child the choice to choose to either get to know or investigate their other half. The cons are depending upon if the donor chooses to accept the communication at that point in time. It is 18 years. Where that open donor is in his life, in terms of psychologically, mentally, physically. Those are the cons. But from the background in which you chose them to be your donor, you just hope that they are willing to accept communication and be a stand up person.
