Checking references

The first step in checking a reference is to call the reference and ask them some questions. If you can ahead of time, make sure you have those questions written out so you're not caught in the moment wondering what to ask. But ask some questions. If they gush about her and they love her, then that's a really good sign. If they're a little tight-lipped, then pay attention to that. Most importantly, I would definitely trust your gut. So when you're on the phone with the other mom and you're asking her different questions and she's giving you some information about that nanny, you can ask other questions like, is there anybody else who may have been able to observe this nanny at a birthday party? Or a neighbor who may also know her? And ask for that secondary reference. That can be helpful. Also you may want to make some intentional errors about her resume to see if they get caught by this person who's supposed to be an authentic reference. That's important. Additionally, you might want to get the address of this person, the house that they used to work at, just to verify that it's an actual place.
