I think that bonding with anybody is a tricky thing. And with preschoolers, it's even trickier. But in any kind of social interaction, they key is to find that link that excites the other person or excites you. So for a preschooler, if you can find that one thing that they're excited about, that they light up when they hear you talk about it, or play it. And I understand as a parent who hated playing pretend, "Oh, let's go dress up and play store," that you can't always play what they want to play. But then find something you are excited about and you like doing, and see how you can incorporate that into it and share your own interests and excitement; and that builds a strong bond between the two of you that can last a long time.
