Advice on preparing kids for newborns

Preparing our kids for a new baby has always been a concern of my wife and I. I know that one thing we did specifically was to rent a Doppler kit or a fetal Doppler, which is simply a little handheld device that allows you to record and amplify the fetal heartbeat while it’s still inside mommy’s tummy. So every night after bathtime we allowed the kids to run the Doppler across mommy’s belly and listen to the heart beat of our unborn child. And explained to them that this was going to be their brother and sister. And bring them into the excitement of the pregnancy. And I think it really worked. I think they were extremely excited every night to be able to do that. It became a little bit of a routine. I think another thing as we got closer to the actual delivery was we knew that this was going to be a celebration for our unborn son. And we didn’t want the other kids to feel left out. So we had picked them up a few little presents along the way and saved some of them for the actual delivery at the hospital so they didn’t feel left out and they felt like they were part of something bigger. It wasn’t just all the attention going to this new baby. But we were all putting our attention towards this new child.
