How do student athletes choose where to go to college? That's an interesting question because my rule of thumb is the break your leg rule. I'll say to student athletes that I'm working with, "If you broke your leg and you could never play your sport again, would you still want to be at college xyz?" And if they can't answer that question with a resounding, "Yes", then they shouldn't be going to that school. Because let's face it, what percent of student athletes really go on to play professional sports and graduate? It's a very, very small percentage. So you should look at that opportunity to get that athletic scholarship, to get that admissions advantage, to go to the college you want to go to that will prepare you the best for your future life, but not be choosing that college because you think that coach or that team is going to turn you into a professional athlete. Those odds are just too small to choose, to make your choice of college, base your choice of college on the coach or the team. That the choice fo the college should be "What is the best academic and social fit for me in the end?" "Where am I going to be most prepared for my future life as a non-athlete?"
