When we talk about college admissions, it is really not as democratic a process as we would all like to think. It is almost schizophrenic. Really there is a terminology that we use in higher education called enrollment management. That is really what dictates admissions to a certain extent. Obviously, your most competitive, sought after schools have a high academic threshhold. The Ivy League, Stanford, for Duke, schools like that. But at the same time, they all have to adhere to the code of enrollment management. There are certain groups that they need that they strive for to fulfill their student body. They want their student athletes. They want artists. They want musicians. They want socioeconomic diversity. They want geographic diversity. Everybody loves to get that student from Alaska or Montana or Idaho or states that are not that well represented. They want ethnic diversity. Legacies, students that have parents that have attended various colleges get a break in the admissions. Sometimes when people get those thin letters and they are disappointed and they don´t get accepted to the college that really, really wanted to or were aspiring to, they don´t realize what goes on beyond the scenes with the enrollment management and all the groups that need to be fulfilled by the admission offices before the final decision is made.
