Being a teenager I think is, again, one of those things that in society we have made it to be a very difficult process. We talk about it in terms of how hard it is and how there is all this conflict. I think we need to start to re-frame that and think about the joy of watching a young person who really is starting to declare their independence, even if sometimes that seems conflictual. It's a big job for young people to grow up and we know that. It's also a big job for us as parents to step back and to say, 'Respect this young person in the way that they are developing and the choices that they are making.' It's not an easy time, but we can learn a lot from our non-human relatives. If we look at what we call 'the four legged' and we looked at the winged ones, and we ask, 'How do they deal with this time? How does a deer deal with having a young one that she needs to get out of the nest? What happens when they come into conflict? and how do they begin to do that process of separation?'
