Some of the tools that I recommend for teens, especially in my book "How to Deal," is simple tools that is going to help them in the various aspects of their life. Simple things like, three times three times three breathing; three seconds they breathe in through their nose, the hold it for three seconds and imagine anything that's bothering them, then they blow it out for three seconds. Do that three times in a row and it will take the edge off of what's bothering them. Other things that I talk about are just the importance of daily exercise; the endorphines, the stress relief. It's the best antidepressant out there. A pill does not compare to a 40 to 60 minute workout. Other things I talk to them about is control. So many teens out there are trying to control things that they have zero control over; whether its things that they don't want, that are not going the way they want them to or trying to control a parent, a boyfriend, or a girlfriend. That's simply trying to put a square peg in a round hole. The more you try to do that, the more frustrated they become. When you can teach them about how to better identify what they have control over, which is ultimately how they respond to situations in their life; it brings them a lot of peace in their life. Simple things like, forcing themselves to smile. There is a conditioned response in the face and the pleasure centers of the brain. They force themselves to smile, they can't be upset and happy at the same time. Simple things in life that will really help them go a long way.
