Media today is completely different than it used to be when we were growing up. Back when we were growing up there was basically, one television in the living room; the family would watch it. There was a prime time hour, everybody would watch it together. Today there are televisions in every bedroom. On top of that there are laptops, there are cell phones, there are social networking sites, there are also 400+ channels; so there is programing targeted just to children. Children today, 8 - 18 year-olds spend over 7½ hours a day with media 7 days a week, and that doesn't include texting, so that's an extreme amount of time with media. What that means is they're spending more time with media, than they are with parents, more time with media than they are at school, and many kids, more time with media than they do sleep. What that actually means is they're being socialized by media almost more than they are being socialized by parents, any other social institution, peers, peers are part of media, so peers and media go hand-in-hand, but they are being socialized by media more than school. By the way, media is going into schools, so on top of it, eventually media is going to be one of the most important socialization forces for children.
