I'm a mother of four children. I was wracked with guilt because my mother, and everyone around me was telling me, "You have to have a ritual every day. You have to sit down as a family and eat dinner every day;" which was utterly impossible. I work. My kids have activities. Sitting at the dinner table looked like a volcano erupting. Half the kids were there and half the kids were not. It was a mess. I realized that what they were really telling me was, it's important to have family rituals. Real rituals that you can rely on. What do we do? Once a week, we go to Denny's and we have breakfast together. It's not glamorous. We were all sitting there having pancakes. It doesn't have to be fancy. It doesn't have to be deep. Order pizza on Sunday night. It just has to be consistent, so that your kids know it's going to happen. Make a family ritual. Ours is having pancakes in the morning. Yours may look very different, just make sure you have one.
